The Seat of the Soul
If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light[1]
A news round-up since the New Moonof April 27th: Just over 24 hours after the New Moon, we saw the enormous power outage in Spain, Portugal and parts of Southern France. Welcome to modern Europe when the lights go out – a spare torch and candle just doesn’t quite cut it when the trappings of technology are snuffed out in an instant. There have been many attempts to find an adequate explanation; the two with legs though point to either a cyber-attack or an over-reliance on renewable energy which just tipped the balance before energy levels ‘fell off a cliff’, due to a lack of ‘inertia’ in renewable systems to enable a re-boot or recovery.
This was always going to be a particularly difficult Super New Moon to navigate anyway, squaring as it did the final of three hits of the Mars/Pluto opposition (survival issues). What I failed to mention in my last blog was that Pluto was especially powerful, having been stationed at 3 degrees of Aquarius since early March. He is now preparing to turn retrograde in June. And indeed he stays at that 3-degree mark until early July. The second ‘strike’ of Mars opposite Pluto occurred in January when Pluto was at 1 degree of Aquarius and Mars at 1 Leo. Pluto’s upcoming retrograde motion will take him back to this 1-degree mark, where he will station and move forward to reach the 3-degree mark again, (the degree of this latest and final opposition), in January of 2026. These ‘echoes’ of the previous marker points that Pluto will have made in January 2025 and April 2025 suggest that there is more to come, particularly as he doesn’t clear the 3 degree point of this latest opposition until February 2026. And February 2026 is the point of the exact Saturn/Neptune conjunction at 0 Aries that I have already been documenting.
Another interesting point of this most recent opposition was that Uranus, a planet of extreme electrical significance, was conjunct Mars by an aspect called ‘antiscion’. Antiscion is something I generally only use in horary questions, but I think it is worth considering in unravelling a question about ‘why such a big outage now’? That doesn’t mean that in the future we will see more power outages, because Mars will have moved forward and Uranus will have moved into a new sign, so nothing will be quite the same. But I do think the ‘echoes’ could well be heralding a period of extreme events.

On May 1st, just as Venus, currently a warrior queen, entered Aries, the US and Ukraine signed a deal to shareUkraine’s mineral resources, giving the US a slice of the cake, guaranteeing the recoup of some of their costs involved in supporting the war.
The Soul: In my astrological practice I talk a lot about the Soul – our meaning for and expression of life. There are many subtle areas within the horoscope that give us clues to the Soul’s purpose in this life. I particularly like to look at Fixed Stars, as they can give some very deep and subtle clues about the Soul’s mission that are not necessarily shown quite as clearly by the planets. Esoterically, we talk about the Soul coming down through the sky, taking on the qualities of the planets and their aspects, before entering the body at the point of the Ascendant as the individual takes their first breath and begins their life journey. So the Ascendant also gives clues as to the beliefs and perceptions our Soul carries. And then I like to look at the Part of Spirit – the daemon – that gives indications of how the Soul’s purpose may be carried out.
The Pineal Gland: Around the size of a large grain of rice, the pineal gland sits in the centre of the brain and is said to be the link to both the Soul and the divine essence. Our eyes, sitting almost level with the pineal gland, are said to be the windows to our Soul. I always feel you can tell a lot about a person by the expression within their eyes.
Greek physician Galen was the first to describe the pineal gland, and that was as far back as the 2nd century CE. However, he also indicated that the structure was already known to earlier Greek scholars, crediting Herophilus (325–280 BCE) as the first to have described the possible role of the gland. But it was the philosopher Rene Descartes, born in the late 1500s, who spoke about the pineal gland’s role in perception, calling it the seat of the soul. H. P. Blavatsky, the Russian/American mystic/writer and founder of the Theosophical Society, once described the pineal gland as “the special physical organ of perception in the brain, the key to the highest and divinest consciousness in man”[2]. It is considered by many to be our biological Third Eye and the centre of enlightenment. Blavatsky considered the third eye to have been an active organ, but that it had atrophied “along with the early spiritual and psychic characteristics in men”[3].
Its main physical function is the control of the circadian rhythm by the secretion of melatonin. Dr. Joe Dispenza describes the pineal gland as an alchemist, because it transmutes melatonin into some profound radical neurotransmitters. Its function, however, is not just as a neuroendocrine transducer regulating our circadian rhythm, it also contains tiny crystals that are responsible for electromechanical and biological transduction. Dispenza gives the following description after many years of research: “The pineal gland is a crystalline superconductor that sends, as well as receives, information through the transduction of energetic vibrational signals – frequency beyond the senses, also known as the quantum field – and translates it into …… meaningful imagery, the same way as an antenna translates different channels on to a TV screen. The alteration in chemistry creates a new reality. If you’re picking up information from beyond your senses, information that is not originating from visible light or the sun, then it makes sense that it’s called the ‘third eye’. New experiences assemble new neural networks that enrich the circuitry of the brain, and you could describe this as a transcendental reality. As though you are seeing with a different eye and with inner vision and you can never again see reality in the same manner”[4]. Interestingly, in reptiles there are two pineal bodies, a posterior and an anterior, of which the posterior remains undeveloped, but the anterior forms a rudimentary, cyclopean eye.[5]
Like an antenna, the pineal gland has the capacity to become electrically activated and generate electromagnetic fields that can tune into information. A transducer is anything that receives a signal in the form of one type of energy and converts it into a signal in another form. In Dispenza’s opinion the pineal gland can pick up frequencies above our three-dimensional space-time reality, tuning into the higher dimensions of time-space. When a stress compression is applied to crystals it produces an electro-magnetic field. Homing pigeons are particularly sensitive to electro-magnetic energy, so does the pineal gland help them as a navigational tool possibly? Something within their instincts that, unlike humans, they have not lost.
The tiny, stacked crystals within the pineal gland can generate an electric charge in response to a ‘stress’ mechanism that the individual can place on the gland through a specific type of breath/meditative action, which I will describe at the end. On the surface of the pineal gland are tiny hairs called cilia. As the individual consciously moves cerebrospinal fluid through the spine and up to the brain, these cilia are ‘tickled’ and stimulated. Charged particles travel up the spinal column and, as they increase in velocity and acceleration, they create an inductance field which draws the energy from the lower centres and delivers it to the brain stem in a spiralling motion. When your pineal gland (or third eye) is awakened because it is picking up higher frequencies, these higher energies alter the chemistry of melatonin.
The ancient Egyptian symbol called the Eye of Horus, which was meant to signify protection, power and good health, is very resemblant of the structure of the pineal gland, the thalamus, the pituitary gland and the corpus callosum as a whole. It seems the Egyptians must have known the significance of the autonomic nervous system, and perhaps also realised that activating the pineal gland meant that they could enter the otherworld, or other dimensions. The Eye of Horus in the Egyptian system of measurement also represented a fractional quantification system to measure parts of the whole – the mathematical formula called the Fibonacci sequence. And indeed the Golden Spiral and Golden Ratio are seen everywhere in nature – sunflowers, seashells, pineapples, pinecones and even in the structure of the Milky Way.
Interestingly, the shape of the pineal gland is similar to that of the pinecone, a symbolism that is found throughout history as the symbolic representation of human enlightenment, the third eye and the pineal gland, including the top of the Buddha’s head. There is a pinecone carved into the holy staff that the Pope carries during religious ceremonies, and they are also often seen within churches as decorations on candleholders representing ‘sources of illumination’.
Pinecones and the symbolism of the Eye of Horus also entered into Freemasonry within their Lodges. In Greek mythology Hermes (Mercury) was the messenger of the Gods, able to travel between the earthly and the divine realms. His main symbol was the caduceus, which consists of two snakes wrapped around a rod, the top of which unfolds into wings. The very top of the rod has a pinecone topped by a crown. Energetically this could be symbolising the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid up the spine/rod from the body to the brain. When the energy reaches the pineal gland/pinecone we have attained enlightenment, and we can ‘crown’ ourselves for having reached our highest potential. And that is the whole purpose of our astrological ‘map’ – so that we can evolve and individuate into the highest potential of the ‘lot’ we have been dealt in this life. The pineal gland is also said to be the source of Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) in our bodies, possibly released during heightened states of spiritual consciousness, such as birth, death and when receiving enlightenment during a ‘kundalini’ moment. Pinecones are also very light sensitive, closing down in the dark and opening in the light, highly symbolic of its link with the circadian rhythm.
How can we help our pineal gland and thereby our Soul: Over time and with the effects of our modern life. It seems that our pineal gland can calcify. This can be due to all sorts of things – fluoridation of our water, exposure to so many other electro-magnetic forces, all competing for space in our lives, blue light from our technology. What can we do? Dispenza describes a technique of breathwork and meditative practice as follows: As you inhale squeeze the lower three energy centres and take your attention to the cerebrospinal fluid being pushed up the spine – just as I spoke about in the description of the caduceus. As this occurs the crystals within the pineal gland are compressed and activated. This activation works on the cilia and allows the pineal gland to become an electro-magnetic antenna, allowing you to pick up signals from the higher vibrational realm. This is a slow, steady action rather than a fast action. Take your attention to the head and try to concentrate on the pineal gland, finally taking your mind beyond its boundaries being fully conscious of the energy that is being produced.[6]
If we are to thrive within our modern world, we must give attention to our minds and our brains. In my last blog ‘Who am I? Who will I be?’ I wrote on how we as humans are being changed and how we may be entering a new phase of civilisation. I find it impossible to believe that humanity was just a random act of the ‘big bang’. On a subtle level, we are so much more than that. At birth our Souls chose a path which was reflected within the astrological horoscope. As we approach the Saturn/Neptune conjunction at 0 Aries, I question whether humanity itself is threatened as we enter a new technological age. How can we as humans retain what we were given at birth? Before it’s too late we must appreciate the gifts that humanity was given at its birth – and our instinctive behaviours and ability for ‘enlightenment’ were part of that. If our spiritual consciousness is being interfered with and destroyed, we must act before it’s too late and we become merely automatons. Remember that tiny pineal gland – it may be only the size of a large grain of rice, but it can do so much. As the quote at the beginning of this blog says – If thine eye be single, they whole body shall be full of light.
